Schedule Regular Drone Inspections
The best way to catch roof problems early is with a professional drone inspection. Traditional inspections required someone climbing on your roof, which risks damage and misses fine details. Drone inspections capture high-resolution photos of every shingle, flashing, and valley — without anyone stepping on your roof.
We recommend a drone inspection at least once a year, ideally in spring after winter weather and before storm season. If your roof is over 15 years old, twice a year is smart. The cost is minimal compared to catching a leak early — water damage repairs can run into the thousands.
Keep Your Gutters Clean Year-Round
Clogged gutters are one of the most common causes of roof leaks. When water can't flow through the gutter, it backs up under the shingles and soaks into the roof deck. In Missouri, spring storms and fall leaf drop both clog gutters fast.
Clean your gutters at least twice a year — once after the leaves fall and once in spring before storm season. If you have overhanging trees, consider gutter guards to reduce buildup. Watch for sagging gutters or water spilling over the edges during rain; both are signs it's time for a cleaning.
Watch for Missing, Curling, or Cracked Shingles
Shingles are your roof's first line of defense. After any storm — especially hail or high wind — walk around your house and look up. Missing shingles expose the underlayment; curling or clawing shingles mean the asphalt is aging and losing its seal; cracked shingles let water through.
If you spot any of these, don't wait. A single missing shingle can lead to a roof leak within weeks. Call a licensed contractor for a quick repair before the next rain. Most shingle repairs take under an hour and cost far less than the water damage they prevent.
Check Your Attic for Early Warning Signs
Your attic is the best place to catch a roof leak before it reaches your ceiling. Grab a flashlight and look for dark stains on the underside of the roof deck, damp insulation, or a musty smell — all signs that water is getting in.
Also check for daylight peeking through the roof boards. If you see light, water can get in. Do this check after every major storm and at least twice a year. Early detection saves thousands in structural repairs.
