Engineered wood siding with SmartGuard® protection

LP SmartSide
Est. 1973Engineered wood siding with SmartGuard® protection
Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee
LP Building Solutions pioneered engineered wood strand siding with its SmartGuard process, which treats wood strands with zinc borate for termite, rot, and fungal resistance. The result is siding that combines the warmth and workability of real wood with up to 2x the impact resistance of fiber cement — built for Missouri's hail and storm season.
Why homeowners choose it
Real-wood character
Deep cedar-grain textures and longer boards create warm, clean exterior lines with fewer visible seams than many traditional siding products.
Impact performance
The engineered wood substrate is designed to absorb impact and is a practical option for Missouri homes exposed to hail, branches, and wind-blown debris.
SmartGuard® protection
Every strand is treated with waxes, resins, and zinc borate to resist termites and fungal decay while helping the finished board manage moisture.
Flexible design
Lap siding, vertical panels, shakes, trim, and soffit can be combined to define gables, entries, additions, and full-home transformations.
Efficient installation
Long, lighter-weight boards can reduce seams and simplify detailed cuts, helping an experienced crew create a precise finished exterior.
Custom color freedom
Choose factory-finished colors where available or field-paint primed products to coordinate with nearly any roof, masonry, door, and trim palette.

Beyond the surface
A complete system
Long-term performance depends on the materials behind the visible roof or siding, plus careful installation at every opening, edge, and transition.
Water-resistive barrier
A properly lapped drainage plane behind the siding directs incidental water down and out instead of trapping it against the wall sheathing.
Window and door flashing
Openings are integrated with flashing tape, head flashing, and the wall barrier so water follows a continuous path to the exterior.
Correct clearances
Specified gaps above roofs, decks, grade, and horizontal surfaces keep siding away from standing water and help preserve warranty coverage.
Fastening and joints
Fastener placement, penetration, stud attachment, joint spacing, and sealant details follow LP installation instructions for a flat, secure exterior.
Trim and transitions
Corners, bands, fascia, windows, doors, and material changes are planned as one system so the finished elevations look intentional.
Finish protection
Cut edges are sealed as required, joints receive compatible sealant, and field-painted products receive an exterior coating suitable for engineered wood.

Common Questions
How is LP SmartSide different from fiber cement?
LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product, so it is lighter, offers deep wood texture, and has strong impact performance. Fiber cement is non-combustible and has different moisture and installation characteristics. We compare the priorities, architecture, exposure, and budget for your home rather than calling one product best for everyone.
Does LP SmartSide resist termites and rot?
The SmartGuard process treats the wood strands with zinc borate and other protective ingredients for resistance to termites and fungal decay. Correct flashing, clearances, sealing, and maintenance remain essential to long-term performance.
What does the 5/50 warranty mean?
The limited warranty provides five years of full labor-and-material coverage for qualifying manufacturing defects, followed by prorated coverage for the remaining term. Coverage is subject to LP's current written warranty and installation requirements.
Can LP SmartSide be installed over damaged siding?
We first inspect the wall assembly. Damaged or moisture-affected material should be removed so the sheathing, flashing, and water barrier can be repaired. Covering an unresolved problem can hide damage and shorten the life of the new exterior.
How much maintenance does it need?
Keep landscaping and soil away from the siding, clean it gently, maintain sealant where specified, and repaint field-finished siding before the coating fails. We review the important clearances and care items after installation.
